Why Jamoji
Jamoji is a lifestyle emoticon mobile application that provides picture text images of Jamaican culture. It is among the first of its kind to provide users with culturally specific emojis.
The idea for Jamoji came about early in 2016 after many daily text exchanges between founder, Colleen Hall and a cousin. After migrating to the United States several years before, Hall noticed that Jamaican patois was often spoken in the home, but almost never written. With increased access and instant connection we are now able to share more than just the big life events with our extended families. The intricacies of daily life and increased use of emoticons led to the discovery that something was missing; the spirit, character and culture of Jamaican patois didn’t match the options that were out there.
Fun fact: Jamoji’s images of an “avocado” and a pregnant woman were published before Unicode had officially released any such emoji.
It’s fun to express ourselves in picture text, but the industry standards and expansion does not necessarily mean everyone is represented. Jamoji bridges this gap as its emoticons continue to evolve and expand its reach every day.
The growing Jamaican diaspora and visitors to the island also inspired the 2022 launch of the book, Jamoji—Essays of Life and Play in Jamaica!
Contextualized by the Jamoji mobile application, Jamoji, a creative nonfiction/memoir of life in Jamaica beyond the resort gates. It’s a place to learn, to be seen and to inspire ownership of our story in a collection of essays.
Our goal is to become an Island staple in living, sharing and learning, for Jamaica, the Diaspora and beyond. Through music, sports, Jamaican patois and tourism, Jamaica has a worldwide presence and has great influence on pop culture. Being an island largely of African descendants, 92.1%, it is easy to see where products and services overlook representation for specific groups. Jamoji wants to change that and to provide options for every user.
